FLL Involvments

The FLL league has expanded greatly over the past two years, thanks largely to the efforts of the FRC team to foster and expand this program in the local elementary schools. Our first school team, the lone Sault entrée, represented us in 2006 at the Sudbury Science North FLL Regional, placing a strong 2nd place. Impressed with the program, this Sault team was joined by our own FRC members, who went on to mentor 12 new teams for the 2007 season, which allowed us to host our own FLL regional event.

This year, as momentum continued, we added 7 new teams with all former teams returning to create a huge Northern Ontario regional that had 18 teams join us and compete in this year’s competition. FRC team members mentored 12 of these teams and assisted with the rest, also teamed up with Sault College to host the event and provided the referees and many of the judges and helpers to make this a smooth even and an overwhelming success. Team members are already working with elementary schools to expand this program even further for next year. With 14 out of 16 of the city’s Public elementary schools now participating in FLL, and the local Catholic School board also participating, the Sault now has one of the highest FLL participation percentages of any city in Canada.

FTC Involvments

This is the third year that The Knights of Alloy has run teams in the FTC division. This year, we expanded this participation by creating a first-of-its-kind senior Robotics Technology credit (grade 11). This new course, running the entire school year was set to conclude in the spring with two teams participating in the Ontario FTC Championships. Interest in the course was high and participation lead to 75% of the students in the FTC course also joining the FRC Knights of Alloy in December of this year. We expect to expand this program with further courses and improved participation in both the FTC and FRC programs.
